On the night of the 91st annual Academy Awards on February 25, 2019, American Director, Spike Lee, won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award for his film “BlacKkKlansman.” The film-maker, known for his cultural commentary and iconic bespectacled look, took the stage to accept his first award win dressed in a purple suit and purple glasses, a nod to his classic style, but with a twist.
Lee’s glasses, which drew much attention on the red carpet, were custom-made specifically for this special night by Italian-based luxury eyewear designer, Jacques Durand Atelier.
CONCEPT AND IDEA:
Days after the Ceremony, media outlets reported on Mr. Lee’s long overdue victory while drawing attention to his unique clothing and accessories. Since then, interest in Spike Lee’s purple frames has grown steadily.
The Jacques Durand Company, in collaboration with Punto Ottico Humaneyes stores, has decided to produce a limited edition of 49 pieces of this design and color. Each frame will be numbered and engraved with Spike Lee’s signature. The price of an exclusive set of these frames is $1,000, of which 100% will be donated in Spike’s name to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University in New York City.
